I'm team vim,
I used to use nano, but the Uni forced me to learn how to use Vim for basic file editing...
And I found it wasn't as bad as I thought initially, and found it more comfortable.
In either case - I don't really do anything advanced with what vim can do.
But I'm not gonna tout superiority of one editor to another that's silly.

in terms of preference 100% nano but there is always a non zero chance that you may need to putty/telnet/whatever into an ancient legacy machine that doesn't have nano or emacs that makes it worthwhile to know at least the basics of vi (i.e. enough to paste in something you edited in something easier to use on your local machine & save it)

Learning vi can be seen as torture. Been there, done that.
But street cred isn't what vi is about, it's about massive power. Once you know how to use vi, it's a delight to use, and it puts a lot of power in your hands.
I once had a colleague who had to edit a huge file, and what he had to edit wasn't fit for Notepad's find-and-replace, so he had to find-and-manually-replace and he'd been at it all morning when I asked him what he was doing. He showed me the file and told me what it was he had to edit, and how his standard tools weren't able to do that for him.
I opened the file in vi, fed it a regexp, and it was done, in about a second. When he had picked up his jaw, he mumbled that he had to have that too.
He found a vi-for-windows, but he didn't like the torture very much, so he stuck with Notepad... His loss ;-)

If you don't know how to do it, you'll do it worse with nano anyway. Period.

I didn't really know Notepad++ tbh. I've heard the name, but don't think I've ever seen it in action. I see it launched in 2003, I think this demonstration was at most 2 years after that, so he might have taken a look at it before he picked the "real" Vi for Windows.
I see it supports regexp and syntax highlighting and has a nice list of syntaxes it supports. Seems nice enough.

I have opened a file in vim, tried to type into it, and failed. So I'd say the developers sadly failed to grasp what a text editor is supposed to do.
About nano I've only ever heard the very confusing combination of complaints that people are confused how to control it, and about how there is a bar at the bottom telling you how to control it at all time.

What's the usual way? Vi has been doing this for decades. Also it tells you how it works if you open it. `:help vim<Enter≥`

It's
THE
text editor for UNIX, but it's a weird thing (like so many other UNIX utilities), so you might not ever have used it. Here's a start:

Those were different times 😄
Well, different in that most of the civilized world used WordPerfect (some heretics used Word), which has vanished today.
But vi was there then and still is today :sunglasses:
