We Americans used to wonder what it felt like for Germans to live in a nation that turned itself into a pariah nation under Hitler.
Now we know.

You're not there yet, you're only just transitioning. Give it a few more months and you'll start to feel what it's like to live in a dictatorship. And in a few years you won't recognise your country anymore.
Better get rid of this cult, quick. If they are given more time to dig themselves in, you'll need a bloody revolution to get your democracy back.

I sometimes think of the βinner migration" that many intellectuals took, i.e., retreating into a purely private life.

And soon you'll all learn the answer to the question a lot of people had: Why nobody took Hitler out of circulation before he fully consolidated control.
Not that I don't feel with all who now don't burn their lives in possibly futile acts of resistance. Hope (that it will blow over or that somebody else will do the necessary thing) is sometimes poisonous.
