I believe, that was one of the promises of D*, that never materialized: downloading one's data and uploading it to another pod to be back in business instantly. AFAIK, you need to start from scratch with a new account.

Thanks David, for giving us all a stable home these past 15 years, it has been a great run!

We were just reviewing the stats and in the last month Diaspora as a whole had 4,390 active users of whom 513 (9%) were here on diasp.org. Overall the data shows D* has been slowly shrinking and losing pods over time.

It's a big question what to do next. D* is shrinking. I like Friendica, but it's been really unreliable. Mastodon is restrictive with a lot of features I don't like.

Going forward, a big concern is: What will remain of images tagged/displayed "here"? And of course, how to stay connected to long-time friends/family/acquaintances "here". Diaspora social? Some posts seem to suggest all of diaspora* is going down, but I've not seen that stated (yet?). Anyway, best of luck "here" - where I hope to remain, I guess another pod. :-(

Be careful with BlueSky, which is not as innocent as a butterfly seems to be. :/ I wanted to try it out, but wasn't thrilled, so I closed and deleted cookies and so on, but there's still a tracker that's impossible to find (and to remove) which parasitizes other logins. Meh...

diaspora-fr is great, but Fla the podmin is all alone to manage, and needs a new server. You can consult the -> Fediverse Observer, where you'll find all the lists of all the instances (diaspora, Mastodon, Friendica, etc). Click on 'List' rather than 'Map', then in 'Software', select the platform. Then in the list, sort by column. In short, poke around...

• To save your data and photos, go to : profile / settings / export (at the very bottom). These are .json.gz files. • To my knowledge, we can't yet transfer contacts from one pod to another... Here's my home-made trick : on the Contacts page, go to 'My contacts' (not 'all' my contacts) ; with the mouse button held down, select by highlighting the whole list ; release the button, copy (ctrl C), then open a word processor and paste (ctrl V). Save. It's not ideal, but you'll have a record of your contacts with their URLs, so they'll be easier to find. Hope this can help...

Came here from joindiaspora, in the early days :) David's post gives a lot of did for thought about Diaspora and the Fediverse. All I know is that I will always remain in the fediverse, or whatever project embodied the ideals of free, decentralized and cooperative social networking. I'm also on Mastodon and Mbin, I'll post links to those in my stream later. As for Diaspora, I don't want to choose a pod lightly. I got accounts on other pods, including diasp.org, initially for federation purposes but when diasp.net disappeared I moved. @zulu I'm on diasp.eu now, but "began" at ~~diasp.net~~ (which crashed). I had federation/back-up accounts on ~~JoinDiaspora~~ (closed), ~~diasp.de~~ (closed), and on diasp.org (about to close), and when finally deciding to get rid of my Twitter & Facebook accounts earlier this year, I got myself some new back-up accounts:

I'm on friendica.world (this account, @phle; because it was the first server in the list described with a language I feel comfortable with, and also "non-niched", at the time of my sign-up), and on mastodon.nu (an instance located in Sweden; I'm @phle there; [link to list of mastodon servers], [unofficial guide to Mastodon]).

For my purposes, Friendica federates better (for me), as it federates in both directions to both diaspora* and mastodon, while mastodon isn't connected to diaspora*. Both Friendica and Mastodon can connect to Bluesky, by the help of the "bridge".

Slight warning: Friendica has a learning curve. It took a while to "get it". To fine-tune all the settings. And you'll need to find the stuff you want to fill your stream with. But yeah, you too have been on diaspora* for quite a bit. It's easy to forget that our diaspora* stream was empty at first. Patience. It pays. Welcome to the extended Fediverse!

In the spirit of 'keeping it simple', I'd mention that it's super easy and quick to "just join another pod", cut and paste your description if desired, and use this time to (re) add existing/long-time contacts from the new pod, maybe also 'signal flare' to usual hangouts, and (remember?) look for the "new here" post.

I'd say 75% or more of my (smallish) diaspora* regulars are already migrated to d.social or glasswings or whatever... No muss, no fuss really, though we can always try/add new platforms and connecting apps/sites. But just to avoid the annoyance of making a whole new move (like after Google + and some pods 'here') it's really easy, and there's still time (thanks for the long lead, @David)

I too think Bluesky is great, and is what it is - short form and with some big, mostly one-way celebs and organizations, but also easy to use and to connect with real people with similar interests. But it's not replacing this comfy living room (pora*), only another channel. Guess I'm old school (but also a social scientist!) Choices!

@Michael Fenichel Yes, this (staying in the diaspora* sphere) is definitely the best solution - no learning curve, just the moving (not both!).

For me, it was also part of trying to "lure people to leave Facebook", of which the "event" function was the most important. (Friendica has a calendar function, but it's not as slick as the Facebook one. It exists, though.) I'm unsure of whether others actually left, but I did get some of them interested in adding alternatives to their repertoire.

Oh, and the #NewHere (and #OldHere; #introduction as well) - those were great: I would have felt very lonely without them when I first arrived here.

I actually happened to dive into my diaspora* DM box, where I had a conversation with palantir (no longer active - account gone). They suggested a (one-time) follow-up function, some time after sign-up: basically just an automated e-mail checking that things were running smooth, and with a "how to"/"frequently asked questions" section added. A kind of "catch those who post once (maybe without tags), get no responses, has an empty Stream, and then never logs in again".
