I have to watch my poor kittens flinch every time a firework goes off. Curtains closed to minimize noise and all. Fuck fireworks. No fucking point at all, just noise and pollution.

Turn on the TV or some music, it's what worked best with a previous cat.

much sympathy for anyone taking care of their pets that are scared of fireworks.
(though I have no pet right now, have had them in the past that were scared, and here we also get idiots firing off weapons for celebrating, uh, hello, that has to land somewhere!)

I've always had cats, and all of them were afraid of the fireworks.
This is my first year with mother puss and her 4 kittens. Mom is a bit nervous, but the kittens are mostly curious.
They sat in the window, completely at ease, watching the fireworks here on the street corner 😲

In case you're not open to unsolicited advice from strangers:
That sucks :/
In case you are:
what's worked for me has been starting up fireworks on youtube like six hours in advance on very low volume. Slowly increasing the volume whenever she's relaxed again.
We've done this since we got her so it's never been a problem though, by the time midnight hits she barely wakes up. Maybe it's less helpful if they're already scared though, I'm not an expert.

Last year was 7 hours straight and thousands of "how did they afford that?!" dollars of the flying percussive ones, from 3 houses close enough I can throw a grenade at one.
The only breaks were to set-up the next barrage of 30.
It was a direct assault from wads who were ready for revolution at the time.
I dunno what to expect this year, but I'll again be hunkering with Daphne in the camper from dusk till 1am. She is devastated by the noise.
She was a July 4th runaway we adopted. 😕

And, no.
The responsibility should NOT be on pet owners, becoming the consequence of selfish actions.
There is no reason one mouth can speak for the aural violence besides "suck my freedom".
Music doesn't stop the percussion impacts. Doesn't help much at all. But makes people feel better and helpful by saying it, and then they don't have to care because they offered a perfectly reasonable solution. 😜

We all already knew you were a confirmed unlover of anything fun when you removed toots and started buddying up with Meta.
You can educate yourself on the history of fireworks here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fireworks#History
Just as we tolerate the existence of Mastodon in the fediverse, you can tolerate others' enjoyment of pyrotechnics. I'm sure your cats will be perfectly fine hun 💅.

When I had a cockatoo, it would get scared as well, even with curtains closed and a blanket over the cage (I wouldn't let it out of the cage, at all), if the lights were off (with them on, there wouldn't be a sudden flare in the sky, so at least partially mitigated, but it would still get scared by the loud noise).
By the end, the poor thing would be trembling, I'd have to hold the cage in my arms to let it know that it's okay and it's safe.
Fireworks are kind of alright if they're far away, but what still fucks people up around here are those damn poppers. There were literal 'popper blocks' that had like 16 or 24 of those held together, and they would all explode at once, it would sound like a cannon went off. Those fall under an actual 'explosive' category, because one half of that thing can destroy an entire plastic recycling bin.

I had that issue with my dogs for over a decade. I slept with them in my office blasting metal to drown out the booms. They slept and didn’t have panic attacks. I slept ok, but it was worth it for them.

@Gargron
My dog was a puppy during our first Christmas/New Year, so what I did was put on some "chill music for pets" very loudly that night, and then play with her during the fireworks and being very cheerful, not reacting at all to the booming (which was hard because *I* hate loud noises too), and not looking overly concerned for her.
They are like kids. If they see you worry, they worry. Best thing you can do is look unconcerned and interact with them, give them treats during the booms, and make sure they are distracted.
I've read that compression works for dogs, but I'm not sure how it is for cats. Thankfully I didn't need it.

I used to build a blanket/pillow fort for our pupper, and then I'd give her lots of snuggles and play nature sounds to drown out the fireworks.

Not just the pets, lots of veterans and people with PTSD are having a hard time right now. That selfish attitude of "I don't really care about other people, or other living beings, as long as I'm having a good time, only my needs and wants are important" is the reason why the world is so fucked up.
