Like (probably) most of you, I got the news that #
Twitter wants to become #
decentralized:
https://twitter.com/jack/status/1204766078468911106At first I didn't really trust it. After all, why would a platform like Twitter change in such a way that it becomes very easy for its customers to leave? Well, that might be part of why they want it, believe it or not.
One of the documents that #
Dorsey quotes, is "
Protocols, not platforms". Long read, but definitely worth your time.
Seems like having to play content police for the whole world is a daunting task, and people are going to be angry with you for removing content as well as for not removing that same content. Offloading unsatisfied customers to other... let's use the word pods, would leave a more homogenous customer base, for which content policing would be a whole lot easier.
I love this idea, and I can't imagine #
Bluesky not at least seriously considering #
ActivityPub as the way to go. We'll see where this goes in the next couple of months!
