Even average or slightly-below intelligence ought not to make people vote against their own self interest. Nor does it make them likely to be less empathetic to others.

@Khurram Wadee True. Sometimes I think it would be a good idea to have people answer a few simple questions about the world before they get their ballot, just to make sure they have at least a basic grasp of what's at stake.

But that would probably introduce more problems than it would solve...
