Well, actually september is supposed to be the best time for them in this region. They weren't at their best, that was for sure. But once I sat down there and smelled mussels, I just had to order them ;-)

You don't want them frozen and defrosted, indeed. I live very close to the absolute mussels hotspot in our country:
Yerseke
. Mussels are grown in the Oosterschelde, and if you ate mussels in France, there's a fair chance they came from Yerseke.

very interesting read. and hey, look here: "The mussels are grown and harvested entirely at sea in a mostly natural process."
no sad monoculture, just let the sea do its job. 👍

Only ate them once, and yes, my bad luck, got sick like never before.
The funny thing is that I love seafood a lot more the meat. I was always first in line to taste new fish. I build a crab cage with out cook on board of a ship and we at it for at least five days :-) I still let these shell-fish pass but hope you had a nice meal.

Mussels and oysters in the Oosterschelde were an important reason to build the
Oosterscheldekering
. It would have been a lot easier and cheaper to just build a dam and close the Oosterschelde off, but that would mean the salt water would turn sweet, and the entire shellfish industry would disappear.
The ships that were built for the construction of the Oosterscheldekering were named after them: Mytilus (mussel), Ostrea (oyster), Cardium (clam) and Macoma (also a sort of clam).

'Frietjes met Kruidensaus', 24/7 if you ask me but 'mosselen' in August?
Bold, IMHO.

Same here, indeed. But I figured it's almost september ;-)
Besides, once I smelled mussels, I just couldn't help myself: I had to have mussels. But they weren't really good yet, I'll have to go back next month and see if they're better then :yum:

with all the sewage the brits are spilling into the north sea, might it not be dangerous to eat these organic water filters? i had heard some years ago that it was nearly poisonous to eat mussels and oysters from the southern french atlantic coast due to coli bacteria or similar ...
but nonetheless: guten appetit ... :-)

Oh yes, we are strongly recommended not to eat stuff from the Westerschelde, because of all the PFAS that is dumped into it in Antwerp. But the Oosterschelde, where our mussels come from, is considered clean.
