Wow, that's quick: an alternative for #Instagram in Russia. I haven't found more info than this article, but I assume they took #Pixelfed and made some minor adjustments.

Let's see how this goes. Being an optimist, I would say that this is going to be a massive, MASSIVE boost to Pixelfed, that will have a permantent impact on the online world, even after the war in #Ukraine is over. As they say: every dark cloud has a silver lining.

Let's hope they are going to do the same with WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook and all those other commercial, closed-source dataharvesters.

@hans Hi, what makes you think they took Pixelfed codebase? AFAIK, this is going to be a usual closed source platform. It's going to be centralized. There have already been attempts to create "a local Instagram" - by VK team - unsuccessful, people stayed on Instagram "because all the world uses it". Facebook's local alternative is Vkontakte and it is the only successful local social network. After Insta's block most people are moving to VK and Telegram. Decentralized world is being ignored :(

what makes you think they took Pixelfed codebase?

Two things.

1: it was announced quicky after Instagram disappeared, so there wasn't time to build something new from the ground up;
2: why would you make something new if there's already something around that does the trick?

But, as I said, I assumed it would be based on Pixelfed, I didn't find any technical details.

@hans The devs are talking about releasing demo versions of Android and iOS apps for their project. Pixelfed doesn't have official mobile apps yet (?). In their interview founders claim they started developing long before Instagram's block. I will be very surprised (pleased) if it has anything to do with Pixelfed, but not likely.
