Watching TV for a bit, National Geographic, about #lions. How in earth do we call lions the kings of the jungle?

Lions don't live in the jungle. Leopards, panthers and jaguars do, but lions live on the savannah.

Looking around on the internet a bit, I think that the reason we call lions the "king of the jungle" is because the word "jungle" did not always refer to what we now call jungle environments.
