Rumour has it that Mikhail Gorbachev has passed away.

Yup, confirmed. And although he's reached the respectable age of 91, it makes me sad. He ended the Cold War, made the world so much friendlier and safer.
May you rest in peace, sir.

he did nothing special; he just happened in the «right place» on the «right time»; the beginning of the end of the empire was ripe. please don't make him a kind of «prometheus».

I think what he did was special: he guided the empire to a new situation, without violence, bloodshed and destruction. I agree that the Soviet Union's collapse was unavoidable at the time, but a dickhead like Stalin or Putin would have tried to keep things as they were, without any regard for human lives.

i'll just remind of his sending troops in 1991 ― definitely not on his first day in power, ― to try and prevent baltic states from restoring their sovereignty.
everything good this personage did while in power, he was _forced_ to do by the circumstances. he was no visionary, no liberator ― just a man that had finally come to power only to find out that the power just slipped away.

while i agree it could've been way bloodier, gorbachev is surely overromanticized in the west. gasparov's take here is a bit more sobering.

i know of it in general terms, and only because of more recent reading i did on soviet/russian wars and military crimes; i did not know the details.
once more ― gorbachev was in power at the time. so this ads to the point i'm trying to make, i guess.
