Short summary:

In the 70ies, the "extra-parliamentary opposition" (APO) formed as a leftist movement that was not consenting with the rule (and a lot of comprimises) of the Grand Coalition (which we had again in Germany for many years until a few days ago) and with the restrictions of an emergency act (which we have now again), and a generic distrust in the conservative system after the second world war. They mainly wanted to question and discuss, but a militant group lead by Andreas Bader and Ulrike Meinhoff spawned from the movement who believed that it is justified to resist with force, by kidnapping, shooting, and bombing whomever they felt represented the system (industrial leaders, general attorneys, police, and many others). They were "formally trained" by other terrorist groups (mainly the PLO), and by the East German Ministry for State Security (StaSi) - "one of the most effective and repressive intelligence and secret police agencies to have ever existed".

The RAF terrorized Germany for almost 3 decades in 3 generations and disssolved only 1998. They killed 33 people and injured 200, and caused a quarter billion Euro of economic damage. Some of them submerged into Netherlands, some to other countries. 27 were caught, the founders committed mostly suicide in jail in one night with guns, although they were kept isolated from each other (in a high security building that was specifically built for them, the guns were sneaked in by their attorny in cavities cut out into the papers of the legal files). At least one of them turned Neonazi, and some appearently continued criminal acts until 2015, but appearently not with a terrorist background. 4 members have not been caught until today and are still searched for.

The RAF massively influenced German legislative, judicative and executive policies.

That would cause a lot of grief on all sides... With technology of today, crude world views, negative energy, and grouping processes have much faster speed and higher reach / pervasion. And unfortunately, society has not become much smarter and more reflective. Withouth working in this area, as far as I hear, RAF is not even part of the German history curriculum. Education for critical and independent thinking is not even addressed in school systematically as a civil competence to make people more resilient to propaganda, rethoric manipulation, self-deceiption, mobbing, and social media memes. Instead, in education politics, it is rather discussed how to foster the "best" teaching formats... :disappointed:

So I am really worried about the current developments.

I share your worries. We have a party here ("Forum voor Democratie") that wants a "purge of the schooling system and the media". Its leader, Thierry Baudet, claims that schools, universities and the media are dominated by leftists.

Problem with this guy is that he's a major source of disinformation about a plethora of subjects. His political views are dark brown, if you know what I mean. A lot of what he says is complete bullshit, a blatant lie or at the very least taken out of context, but there is an alarming number of people that accept this crap.

We've seen how a politician like that can slowly grow and grow up to the point where he can actually call the shots in a country. And god forbid we make that mistake again...

It's happening everywhere, often with a pretty recognizable association of political color of a dark shade (Yes, I know what you mean). Demagogic methods are universally applied by authocrats, independently of political or religious ideology used as a vehicle: communist, fashist, radical religious, homophobic, to an extent even dominance in organizations (starting in schools or before). Ideology can be exchanged or adapted (see RAF Neo-Nazi above), - I think society needs to learn to recognize and not accept a style / method of communication.
