Nice to see another influx of new #
Fediverse
users. Welcome all!
And nice to see a number of new followers I already know from my time on the birdsite.

Yup. The deal with Musk is done, and I guess that's a good reason for many users to up sticks.

Oh I am sure we will see new users here due to Musk. Twitter will probably quickly become unusable for most people.

I guess we will see how that works out. We did pick up some users when Google Plus tanked.

Once we reach a critical mass, there's no real need for Twitter anymore.
Same goes for WhatsApp.

once we reach a critical mass…
#mastodon
implodes and starts gobbing up matter.
seriously though: people are people, and some or another sh*t can happen to even the cleverest ideas. like someone centralizing the development for the platform (oh, wait, some guy with a russian name is already the central point of crystallization? lol), runs a server that always has the newest features, and thus the most users (oh, wait…)
=)

The userbase imho will also determine the success of the fediverse.
As for your concern on the development of Mastodon; personally it would be a meh argument, I'll just pick a new instance.
Having experienced this first hand: your average computer user is used to a product, a brand, and the services they provide, and has a hard time with the notion of packing stuff and move. Like Invidious or Nwitter, just pick an instance that works, but that is hard for them.

Agree, anything can happen. I'm an optimist, I think good things will happen on the Fediverse.

«I'll just pick a new instance» — yeah, that sounds a natural thing to do, and one of the base stones of
#fediverse
.
but! the admin of a «black hole» instance with a massively larger number of users could just cut you off by selectively blocking smaller instances? his instance's users would thus be ignorant of your existence?
i'm just trying to better understand how it could go wrong eventually =)

It depends on the scenario.
Lets say admin A bans user B.
User B goes to instance C.
Admin A can go to the Admin of C and complain about user B, admin C may do something about it.
If admin C does comply user B can migrate to another instance and try again.
If admin C doesn't comply, admin A can block federation with instance C. If admin A is petty enough he can appeal to
#fediblock
to get instance c blocked on other instances.

Another option for user b is pick another username and disappear in the fediverse. Chances are you can just pick the same username on another instance and its fine.
Since I have an alt account and migrate that one from instance to instance I am personally not really bound or emotionally tied to an account or username. So for me its easier than your average twitter user.

yeah, i get it: individual users can jump instances easily so it's difficult to block users. but it's user hunting and i was not worried about that yet, ― although i might have misformulated what i had on my mind:
say, an instance A with huoooooge number of users could defederate from an instance B with a smaller number of users. instance thus becomes invisible to all users of instance A.
not a (huge) problem and rather a feature if all instances are roughly the same size...

...but what if instance A has accumulated 1000x more users? that actually seems like a possible scenario: newcomers tend to _search_ web for how to create an account, and the idea that _any_ instance is an option would not be a natural one for someone who comes from a centralized social network, right?
idk, i begin to sound like i'm obsessed with this idea, but i'm actually not =) let's just wait and see how this plays out.
i actually don't think t exodus will be massive =)
