this is very accurate: taught (or rather motivated) to promote themselves.
nothing bad with that, it's what we all do in society to a certain degree… it's when this becomes _the_ goal in itself that things tend to go… where they are now with t. and a _lot_ of ppl will remain on t exactly for that… which is good ;-)

Yup. I see it in my own circle too: friends who were trained by Twitter to "need" as many followers as possible. One complained that there was no action... He had posted 6 messages in 8 days, and apparently that's enough on the birdsite to get a lot of interaction. Quantity over quality. He'll have to get used to a different world here on the Fediverse.
