OTOH, we now have millions of Twitter users decrying how insufferable it is to choose a site among a list of domains; to not cater to the singular-ized App Store experience of App = Service.
The crystallization of that kind of sentiment could bring down the Internet, and I'd bet actors like Elon Musk are already positioning themselves to exploit it for nefarious ends.

Twitter hasn't entirely imploded yet, but it's well in its way... Musk has really shaken things up. But yes, should be interesting to see how it affects the larger landscape of social media. A social network that isn't wholly controlled and eccentric billionaires would be something nice (cough cough, Zuck and Musk). Related question for you: what is Masodons revenue model? I assume its not currently based on advertising? How is it self sustaining right now?

I strongly disagree with you there. Other than that it's not needed (there's no such thing for e-mail and that has worked fairly well for decades), it's not going to fly. How are you going to make all admins in the world, individuals, enterprises, governments and whatnot, submit their account info to one central hub? I know I'm not going to.
You could use something like
OpenID
to make account handling easier for your users, but a central hub of control is exactly what the Fediverse is not.

No, just like with e-mail you only need one account. You can exchange messages with everybody who uses ActivityPub (which Mastodon does), as long as they've not blocked you or your server.
Finding people on other servers can indeed be a challenge. Again, just like in the world of e-mail. Checking your federated timeline can give you a good idea of who people on your instance are following.

I hope a lot of ex-Twitter employees check out Mastodon and the Fediverse in general, try hosting a server, and perhaps eventually write new software for other services that could be connected to the Fediverse.

I joined Mastodon about 3 weeks ago and could not upload photos to posts via the iOS app (tried several times). 502 server error received. I almost gave up posting on the platform. In the end another user told me about a 3rd party app today, through which I could post picture posts to Mastodon without a problem 🙌 Is there an issue with uploading photos to posts on the iOS app? If so it would be great if this could be looked at, to not deter new users from starting posting. Thanks!
