It’d be nice if you could slap a fediverse: proto onto links to toots and such, so that https://toet.dnzm.nl/max/RANDOM_TOOT_ID would become fediverse://toet.dnzm.nl/max/RANDOM_TOOT_ID.

Following that link wouldn’t take you to some rando’s activitypub server, but open up your favorite app (which should be @Tusky, because Tusky is great). Web clients can easily translate the URLs on the fly.

It’d be like mailto: and ftp: links that have been around since forever, and more recently gemini:. The web is more than plain HTTP (even if a lot of stuff defaults to being built on top of it, these days).

Who wants to point out the fatal flaw in this that I undoubtedly overlooked? #askfedi

@Max Well, fedi isn't one protocol; mail, ftp, http(s) and the likes are.

Not saying it can't be done, but it's very much a moving target.

@hans true, that. Maybe separate protocols for `activitypub`, `ostatus`, and so on. I don't think there's *that* many, and even though they're moving in terms of functionality, the fact that they exist is pretty fixed, by now.
