Apparently Eloon launched a poll, asking if he should step down. I sincerely hope he remains in control for at least a few more months.

He's doing a fantastic job convincing people that open, federated systems like #Mastodon are the way to go. It's in the best interest of the whole world that he be given the time to drive #Twitter completely into the ground.

@V. T. Eric Layton I see no problem in big, although things will surely chance a bit of the Fediverse becomes really big. I've seen it happen in the last few weeks already.

It's still very well possible to keep your own world here small, the Fediverse offers all kinds of tools to shut out the people you don't want to see.

The different parts of the #Fediverse don't grow at an equal pace either: the vast majority of people who leave the aviary flock to #Mastodon, which uses #ActivityPub. I have seen a torrent of new users on Mastodon, but I haven't noticed anything on #Hubzilla or #Diaspora*.

I think the Fediverse, because of its federated nature, can grow really big and still cater to everyone's wishes. And I firmly believe the world is better off with a huge Fediverse than with a handful of big, profit-driven walled gardens with algorithms that only benefit the share holders and not the users.

But I understand your concerns, don't get me wrong. I've seen Twitter behaviour seep in: short, unfriendly and disrespectful reactions, sales pitches and even a few full-on ads. We don't want any of that, we share that attitude, @V. T. Eric Layton.

A trick that usually works, is disabling JavaScript and reloading the page. Believe it or not, but many sites are stupid enough to put their paywall in the client that's visiting them, instead of the server that they themselves control.

Very interesting read. Although it's all about Mastodon, specifically, most of it applies to the rest of the Fediverse as well, and some of it applies even more to Hubzilla / Streams. Hubzilla (minus AP) is definitely slower than Mastodon, especially if you sort your stream by "Posted date" instead of "Commented date", like I do.

Of course, I'm not exactly a prime example with my relatively small circle, but I did notice the difference between here and my Mastdon instance (which, incidentally, I ditched in the meantime.)

@Tanja Yup, this is a nice explanation of the fundamental difference between the Fediverse and the birdsite. It's not Mastodon specific, but the author seems to cater for the misconception of new users that Mastodon is the name of this world. Missed opportunity, but he does a very good job explaining that this is not Twitter.

I too have noticed that Hubzilla is a bit slower than Mastodon. I assume that's because the Mastodon client connects to a streaming service where it gets immediate updates, whereas Hubzilla seems to run a piece of JavaScript code every now and then, that checks if there's anything new to display.

I didn't mean slower in the sense of technology, but in the sense of the conversation.

I'm wondering if part of that is not due to the fact that there's no app that constantly bugs you with notifications. Maybe @Mario Vavti is right about the way desktop notifications are limited.

@Tanja I think the reason for that is simpler: there are far less people using Hubzilla than Mastodon. So, your messages aren't displayed to as many people as on AP.

It's fine to do that but understand it goes to just two big instances and the official Mastodon dev team.

I think the last sentence sums it up nicely:

People will have to get their heads around that, it's a fundamental difference with all the commercial, closed source silos they're used to. #Twitter, #Instagram, #WhatsApp, #Discord, #TikTok, #YouTube and all the rest: those platforms are run by one single, commercial organisation. #Mastodon is not.

I'll write something about that subject later today, have to build a few machines for #Sidekiq first :innocent:

Yes and no. They only work for Zot/Zot6. If you also use ActivityPub (like I do), then you're screwed. ActivityPub can't handle nomadic profiles.

A clean Hubzilla-only install, like @Tanja has, would make it possible to use nomadic profiles, but I tainted my install with impure protocols and now I pay the price :wink:

You can always explain to your AP and d* connections how it works, and connect to them from all locations.

I looked at the original thread on your Mastodon profile. Two things you can pass on from me (without an @-Mention, though ;-)):

There is the pubstream, which does import federated content from people you don't follow, and you can control it somewhat with hashtags.

And he might want to check out Streams, which is simpler as it focuses on the social network aspect as opposed to Hubzilla, which can do all kinds of other stuff. Mike went to great lengths to make it accessible, and I think even for the less technically inclined user it's much easier to understand and configure than Hubzilla. It supports connections to Zot6 and AP.

I would also cite ease of install and update as an advantage for both Hubzilla and Streams. Updating Mastodon doesn't compare. At all.

No, I'm not going to ask you for a boost. But I am going to announce a new account of mine, one on #Mastodon.

I've used #Hubzilla since 2019, after having tried Mastodon, #Friendica and #Diaspora* because Hubzilla has the huge advantage of being able to communicate with almost anything on the #Fediverse. Mastodon can "only" speak #ActivityPub.

Anyway, given the huge influx of new users to the Fediverse, of which 99% chooses Mastodon, it's time to give Mastodon a second try. This is my work account:

@Hans van Zijst Keeps my Hubzilla timeline clean. I don't particularly like Mastodon / AP, for the same reason I don't like diaspora*. Over there, public means public, so everybody can comment on your posts (unless you actively block somebody.) I started this journey with diaspora* about 5 years ago, and then I found out about the other projects. I ended up using Hubzilla and stuck with it because it gives me control over what I actually see. I don't want any AP or d* connections, because even if my direct connection is okay, anybody can comment on their posts, and this very nearly ruined it for me; so I decided to turn those two protocols off.
