Oh, great news here! #Dutch police can now chase and arrest suspects in #Belgium and #Luxemburg (and vice versa). That will make police a lot more effective in the #Benelux.

Let's hope this very close cooperation between countries will spread to the rest of #Europe.

The Benelux (BElgium, NEtherlands, LUXemburg) have been a mini #EU since before there was a EU. We abolished border checks in 1985 (together with Germany and France), which was eventually done in the whole EU.

It's great news until you get Police from Poland chasing a girl into France for having an abortion. Or some such. This would only be an improvement if the whole EU had the same human rights standards, and we're a long way from that.

@Tanja It would mean that if this girl commits a crime in Poland, be it having abortion or killing a few people, she can't cross the border and blow a raspberry at the Polish police.

Which is what happens with drug trade over and over again.

Suppose it's about something like an abortion. She'd be prosecuted by Poland anyway, and Poland would request extradition. Which is mostly a formality in the EU anyway.

There still is a judge in the country where the girl is caught that needs to state the request is honored. In case of drugs there is no reason not to extradite someone unless the crimes are made in the country where she is arrested.

I can imagine a judge it will not be granted to be take her to Poland in case she did a legal thing according to the local law and / or the EU law. Hungary was denied money from the EU for a while for not living up to certain European laws.

@｛Hans｝ I agree; I think France, which has a very liberal approach to abortion, would be much more reluctant to extradite over that than over a drug deal.

It would be crazy to allow the Polish police arrest someone in the Netherlands and allow them to directly take them without permission of the authorities.

Yes, I noticed. But even then. Are the Belgiums able to arrest someone in Groningen to name something and take them to Antwerpen without any Dutch Authority that needs to give an OK?

@Tanja Yup, but hoping that doesn't mean I expect that any time soon. Not many countries work as closely together as the Benelux, that will take some time. But again, I hope one day we'll get there.

Same for a European army, I think we should work towards that too.
