I read an article today about British traffic laws requiring the so-called "Dutch reach" to open your car door. The idea to open the door with the hand farthest away from the door is that it makes you automatically look in your mirror, thereby preventing damage to your door by scooping up a passing cyclist. It happens, I once rode my bike into a door that suddenly opened when I was a kid
But what struck me is the name: #
Dutch reach. Apparently peope believe that this method is taught in the Netherlands. I had never heard of it, however, and none of my friends had either. One of my friends' son got his license a few months ago, and he was never taught to open the door that way either.
We are taught to look in the mirror before opening the door, btw; neglecting it is reason to fail your exam.
