That's why it's called a generalization. Pretty normal rhetorical construction, most people don't actually take it literally...
So, in a country of some 350 million people and only 2 parties, the NYT found a few people who didn't like either party? Shocking 😏

Not really sure what we were discussing.
You seemed to take a joke way too serious, and now you're calling me ignorant of American politics. Not sure if I am, I think for a European I have a reasonable understanding of how things work over there.
Would think that the average American knows less about our system than "we" about theirs. But that would not be a reason for me to call them fools.
