Trip down memory lane: I wonder why, by Dion and the Belmonts. This 1958 recording was remastered in 2012, I think. The video is from 1958.
Dion & The Belmonts I Wonder WhyMy parents brought me up with (almost exclusively) classical music, but in my teens I started discovering other music. I started with rock 'n roll, late fifties and early sixties, I couldn't get enough of Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry and with all the CDs I bought came other artists, like Dion and the Belmonts.
Old rock 'n roll music was affordable, a CD would usually cost somewhere between 5 and 20 guilders (1 guilder is about €0,45, but we're talking mid-eighties to early nineties here), where classical ones were much more expensive. I remember having to pay 45 guilders for a single CD with some Beethoven piano sonatas and 50 for one with some Saint-Saëns pieces. Worth it, btw, I still play those today.
I remember letting my class mates hear Runaway, by Dell Shannon. All I got was laughter. How could I listen to that crap, they wondered.
Del Shannon - Runaway (HQ STUDIO/1961)Ironically enough a few months later we got the
Crime Story TV series on Dutch television, with that exact same song as opening tune. Suddenly they liked it :-D
