Not sure if it's true, but seeing the level of incompetence since 24 february, I wouldn't be surprised...

This is a funny story.

Many wonder why did the #Russians dig trenches in the Red Forest, seemingly unconcerned with radiation. As it turned out they were using maps from 1985. #Chernobyl nuclear disaster only happened in 1986.

It's really THAT simple.

that would explain a lot. i mean, even if as a commander you have total neglect for the wellbeing of your soldiers, what should be the purpose of sending them into an area that is so heavily polluted by radiation that you will have the first deaths just afer several day of exposure ...

It does show how isolated Russia's people are, in all that time that info just had not touched any Russian lives. Also clearly shows how easy it is for Putin to manipulate 'his' people, they only see what he wants them to see, even if other info could have saved their lives. Such fun, living under a Dictatorship.

Let's not overstate the significance of mostly ~18 year olds not knowing about Chernobyl. How many 18 year olds outside of Ukraine would even know about the Chernobyl disaster?

Like ... here in the USA, the biggest collective trauma event of 1986 was the Challenger disaster. But I would be surprised at any 18 year old here in the USA having any idea what I was talking about if I asked them about it. It was the subject of YEARS of intense scrutiny and public debate about what our space policy should be and even what our role in the world should be.

But an 18 year old would have been negative 14-10 years old at the time.
