LOL, well accounting firms only work with the numbers that are given to them by the client and they make the clients sign a statement saying that the numbers are all accurate. It avoids just this sort of liability.

They kept the receipts.
And the audit reports, one hopes.

Up to a certain level. If they could or should have know that the numbers were fishy, they should have taken steps to make sure there weren't authorizing fraudulent books.
I'm not a financial expert, not even American, but even I have heard many stories about him inflating property value to absurd levels. If I have heard those rumours, surely Mazars has?
I think they were well aware that Trump was a crook, but hey: they could make a lot of money, so why not. And now that Trump is finally being scrutinized, they're afraid they'll go down with him, so like the proverbial (?) rats, they're abandoning ship before it is too late.

Depending on the dimensionality of chess that the New York State or Southern District US attorneys are playing, they may find it useful to have the occasional known-dodgey accounting firm running audits. If need comes to twist arms, arms are twisted, and large fish are bagged.
To what extent this is how the game is played, I have no idea. I do, however, have my suspicions.
Hypothetically, an accounting firm might have known books were crooked, and thought they were getting away with it. They might even have been encouraged in this belief. Push comes to shove and they discover otherwise, and that it's more advantageous to give up a former client than to continue with the pretense. What if any deals or threats might be involved I've no way of knowing.

The Game....
I'm thinking of The Wheel of Time which I'm currently reading...
Daes Dae'mar is a phrase in the Old Tongue which translates to The Great Game, but is more commonly known as The Game Of Houses.

Worth noting that Mazars has a lot of inside information. The lawyers aren't after them, either, so easy to cut a deal.
