As i got this, they were digging trenches there? WTF even a small child should know better than to dig in radioactive shit like this, as that is where it has all concentrated over the years, dumb-asses, and the officers giving the orders got away scot-free i bet.

That's what I heard too. I have a hard time imagining that, but weirder things have happened. But you'd expect those in command to know a few things about the country they're invading and taking precautions to minimize risks to their soldiers.
So that's either incredible ignorance, or criminal negligence.
