Never had my own records, I copied quite a few of my parents' to tape so I could listen to it on my bike to school. I do have quite a CD collection, and I did rip quite a few of them to MP3/FLAC.

But I refuse to buy a subscription. Hard pass.

@Hans van Zijst i missed out subscriptions totally. my collection started with records, then switched over to cd and finally now i mostly cope with mp3 files. sometimes i still buy cds. i have most of my cds ripped as mp3 files. my phone has a large sd-card with nearly all of my music on it. i was spared subscriptions because when they became popular in germany data plans for phones were outrageously expensive and no free wifi anywhere. during the day i mostly hear music via my phone, so the sd-card was the only realistic option.

@Alexander Goeres Sounds a lot like my situation. Buying CDs has become difficult, the days when you could spend hours in a record shop, browsing through CDs and listening stuff, are behind us. Nowadays you have to order your CDs online...

I too digitized a lot of my CDs, but at the moment I don't have a central share from where to play it. I have a few of them on my PC and phone though.

During the day I listen to either those records, or find stuff online.

The idea that I have to pay a monthly fee and then run the risk of seeing music I like disappear for whatever reason, is not something I can handle. Call me oldfashioned, but I want to buy my music and then own it.

@Hans van Zijst as a central share i have a raspi at home with an external disc with my music. on that raspi runs a perl-script called minidlna and turns it into a music server. very easy to set up and works perfectly (until the sd-card of the raspi crashes, happens about once a year) ...

That journey sounds very familiar to me. But since 2020 I am back to...... #vinyl .

And I'm loving it! Back to really enjoying music, in stead of backgroundnoise.

@Alexander Goeres I used to have a construction like that too: I had a mini PC that mounted an NFS share with audio and video from one of my servers. It was connected to my TV and amplifier, so I could watch films and series. It also did miniDLNA, although I never used that a lot.

But then I moved, and both my virtualization servers died, and I haven't rebuilt them yet...

@Eelco Mulder :mastodon: I can understand the feeling, just like I rather drive an old car instead of something modern and new. Next month I hope to drive my 41-years-old Citroën CX again, these days I drive an 80's Fiat Panda.

But if you do a dry comparison of the stats, the newer stuff is better 😉

For cars I agree. But nothing beats vinyl on a Technics 80‘s turntable and 80‘s B&O speakers.

I just need to find an 80's amplifier.

(And yes, I have a Raspberry Pi, with an HiFiberry and Moode as streaming device (ans internet radio) attached as well... Open Source of course

)

@Eelco Mulder :mastodon: Nah, give me that same recording, but on CD, played on modern equipment, and the quality will be better.

But the old stuff sure gives a vibe. The careful handling of the vinyl, blowing off the dust before carefully placing it on the turntable and slowly lowering the needle...

The CX has a 1979 radio/cassette and the speakers are from mid-80's. It's for the sake of the originality that I haven't replaced that for more modern stuff.
