And thanks to a rigged system -> biased creation of voting districts (gerrymandering), restricted access for some voters, etc., your vote may not protect you against these folks above gaining power within your government.

True, but not voting will make foul play unnecessary. Not voting is -in my eyes- yielding to whatever group of people is motivated enough to vote.

Oh, I'm definitely NOT saying that folks should abandon all hope and not bother voting. I'm just saying that changes need to be made to this system to create a more fair and accurate representation of the ALL the citizens of this country (the U.S.).

Agree. But those are two different matters, and you're wasting your chance on fundamental reforms if you waste your vote.
Problem in America is that you don't have much choice to start with, you get to pick one of two parties who see frustrating the other one as their primary goal. I think that's one thing that should be changed, Americans should have the choice of several parties, each with their own programs.
That way they would need to form alliances instead of fighting one single enemy. People will vote based on which party's program best matches their wishes, so programs and policy will have to be about what "we the people" want, instead of about keeping a leash on the one other party.

The US certainly needs a few more viable parties.

Yes. It's always "lesser of the evils", unfortunately. One party is totally insane; the other sits with their thumbs up their asses worrying about getting re-elected next time around.
