Last week I got an order to build a #
Matrix server that, if everything goes according to plan, will hosts thousands of people within a year, and should be able to grow far bigger than that in the next years. And the fun doesn't stop there, we might expand it into a one-stop shop by adding Nextcloud, Hubzilla and e-mail to it :sunglasses:
First and most important goal is to offer people an alternative for #
WhatsApp, now that Suckerberg is getting serious about selling their data to anyone and their mother. So an important part of this server will be the #
bridge to WhatsApp, because most people won't leave WhatsApp if that means they'll lose all their contacts there. With this bridge they can keep in touch with the poor sods who can't break the chains yet. And eventually enough people will be on Matrix that they don't need their WhatsApp account anymore.
I installed the bridge today, and of course I couldn't test it myself, because I said farewall to WhatsApp ages ago, but a few colleagues took it for a spin and it seems to work just fine: ready for some serious testing.
I also created a bridge to #
Signal. Not a platform that needs to be abandoned as soon as possible, but for the organisations that are going to be using this server, it's nice to be able to do all their communication from one client: #
Element. I think I'll throw #
Telegram in as well, why not..?
I fell in love with Matrix the moment I first read about it, I built my own homeserver shortly after that and after more than two years of trying to convince people to try it, it's soooo nice to see that it is finally gaining momentum. I delivered two (small) servers in the last month and I consider this one the jackpot. If this one is going to be what we hope and expect it to be, the Dutch won't be needing WhatsApp anymore in a couple of years.
Yes, yes, I know. "You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one."
